I use this recipe to make avocado ink on the hob - using either dried stones I’ve saved on my window ledge, or fresh stones just after I’ve made guacamole.
I think there’s something really wonderful about drawings made with this peachy ink - not least because putting pen - or stick - to paper feels less daunting when you’re not using a stark black. You can’t use this ink in cartridge pens, but making your own drawing implements (from wooden utensils, whittled bamboo or just a stick) can be a lovely process.
You’ll need to buy soda ash (sodium carbonate) to make this ink. But like a lot of the modifiers used in natural dye ink making, soda ash has a lot of other uses (you can use it to scour fabric in the washing machine, and I add a little to the wash when I’ve bought second hand clothes, to remove old oils/whiffs and to make the washing powder work harder).
